Abstract
Over the last few decades, energy security has increasingly been in the focus of interest of many politicians and policy experts, because it has become clear that it is a matter of first-class foreign-policy interest of the state. The paper first deals with the issue of the conceptual definition of energy security and energy policy, and then examines energy security in the case of Germany, the strongest European economy and net importer of energy, whose most important foreign-trade partner has been Russia, burdened by its own political and economic problems. The author concludes that the only alternative to energy dependence of Germany on the import of fossil fuels is turning to the explo-itation of renewable energy sources, in which Germany has already been a
forerunner in the European Union.
