ECLECTICISM AND SECESSION IN URBANISTIC DEVELOPMENT OF SPLIT

Abstract
In the 17th century, a syste>n of bulu"ark fortifications
for the cit y defence against the Turks u>as build around
Split. Upon cessation of that specific danger, the ivalls became
unnecessary and their dis>nantling started duri>žg the
short-term French occupation and u>as resu>ned during the
Austrian govern>nent. Thus, an extensii>e sen>i-circular belt
uas formed around the ci ty, ivith parks, and public and
housing builđings. Some social acfiii ties had already existed
in the ol d hi storical nuclež>s of the ci ty, but u i t h Q>ž
ever increasing city population they became inadequate Q>žđ
new premises had to be constructed on the spots of the
previous defensii e stvuctures. Building u>as particularly intensified
in the second half of the 19th and at the beginn>>ing
of the 20th century, ivhen the Franciscan»>o>žastery on
the uatevfront uas reconstructed, the Procurator Complex
and the theater built, the hospital enlarged, and the secondary
school, St. Peter's Churcb in Lučac, Tobacco Head-
office, Bishop's Palace anđ ofher buildings constructeđ inthe forms of historicisnž anđ Secession.
