Abstract

In the modem inter>var Croatia>i archi tect«re, the
co»cepts of the»!oder» and the avant-garde cannot be differe>
itiated, because they actually co-existed in it s formation,
ll»is denying the border betneen them. The avant-garde
should»ot be ide»tified ni t h visual presentation but wi th
an inner instinet and idea that the function creates a nen
order and a ne!v space, and vice versa, n>hereby the borders
betn>een the esthetic and functional, technical and ar tistic,
as a system of an integral creative i>iteraction, i.e. the only
real and recognizable avant-garda, fade anay. The ava»tgarda
can be read from its logical and syste>natic co»struction
tending towards t ruc mdev»ism, excesses being observable
only as top achievements, and avant-garda merely
as a fhoiight and functional complex of spat!al values, not as
a forced vis»al expression. Croatian architecture is moder»
in a >cry special nav and ava»t-garde in a specific n>ay too,
because n'e experience and consider it as a specific time value
and a n ork of its on >n recog»izable expression, as a creative
period at a sensitive and questionable bovder betn>een
modernism and ava»t-gavda.
