Abstract

The Life of Hilarion Abbot in the Croatian Glagolitic breviaries
In the Croatian Glagolitic breviaries which for the month of October contain Proprium Sanctorum for the feast of St. Hilarion Abbot (October 21st) there is an office in his honour. In this office the readings from St. Jerome's Vita s. Hilarions abbatis are read, which contain the description of Hilarion's youth and education, his departure to desert and his monastic life. The Croatian Glagolitic texts preserve some interesting lexical and translational details. Hilarion's legend in brevaries, as well as the legend on St. Paul the Hermit, confirm the existence of the Croatian Glagolitic translations of the Latin Vitae Patrum.
