Abstract

The development of protein-energy malnutrition (PEP) is a frequent complication in patients who are in terminal stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and treated by hemodialysis (HD) as a form of treatment. PEP is in CKD associated with inflammation, spending energy supplies at a standstill, low serum albumin and pre-albumin values, loss of muscle mass, it is associated with weight loss, and poor clinical outcome. The aim was to assess the nutritional status of patients treated with HD at the hemodialysis department County hospital Požega. For assessment of the nutritional status, we used the body mass index (BMI), the measurement of subcutaneous fat with calipers, applying Multifrequency bioimpendance spectroscopy (BCM), and determination of serum albumin and total iron binding capacity (TIBC). Analyzing the BMI with other investigated parameters we got statistically significant positive correlation with respect to the value of body fat (r = 0.696; p <0.0001) and total fat (FAT) (r = 0.660; p <0.0001), and evidence of a significant negative correlation with respect to the dry weight of the tissue (LTM) (r = -0.643; p <0.0001) and medium negative correlation between BMI and duration of HD (r = -0.392; p <0.026). Pearson correlation coefficient was obtained and statistically significant negative correlation between the mass of dry tissue (LTM) and FAT, we noticed that there was a medium positive correlation with respect to malnutrition inflammatory score (MIS) and age (r = 0.465; p <0.007) , also observed a significant negative correlation between the relative and the MIS serum albumin (r = -0.569; p <0.001). In patients treated with HD as a form of replacement of renal function is particularly necessary regular assessment of nutritional status, and if necessary adequate nutritional support.
