Abstract

The effect of IAA, IBA, IPA and NAA on the formation of callus and adventitious root in lilac (Syringa vulgaris L., native clone from Macedonia which does not form adventitious roots in gardening conditions) has been investigated. During the experiments the anatomy and its changes were carefully examined.
It has been shown that all four growth substances used stimulate cambial activity and callus formation. Adventive roots were, however, obtained only with the applications of IPA and NAA. Further it has been shown that adventive roots and callus develope only in cuttings the sclerenchyma layer of which is discontinuous. There is, thus, undoubtedly a correlation between the anatomic structure and the rooting ability of this plant material.
