Abstract

The species Arum maculatum L. in Yugoslavia was investigated morphologically, cytologically and phytogeographically. Regardless of a certain variability and distribution of this species in Yugoslavia, some constant characteristics important for this species have been established, as follows:
1. The tuber is cylindrically prolonged and rhizomelike
2. The peduncle is longer than half the leaf petiole
3. The appendix of the spadix is not clearly separated from its stalk
4. The upper sterile flowers are arranged in 4, rarely 2—3 mainly condensed spirales
5. The characteristic chromosome number is 2n = 56.
Species A. maculatum has a large distribution in Yugoslavia. It is absent only in the narrow part along Adriatic coast.
