Abstract

The article will identify and define the functions of the theatre critic in respect to audience/readers, actors and theatre management in Osijek daily newspaper (Die Drau, Slavonische Presse, Narodna/Hrvatska obrana, Hrvatski list/glas) from 1902 till 1945. Further analysis of the individual theatre critics (Carl Benda, Josipa Glembay, Ivan Krstitelj Švrljuga, Dragan Melkus, Otto Pfeiffer, Ivan Krnić, Ernest Dirnbach, Franjo Bartola Babić…) will research specificities of the theatre criticism associated with the specific context of Osijek. In the end the results will be incorporated in the context of contemporary media philosophy of Marshall McLuhan (Media is the message!) in order to reveal two levels of theatre criticism impact (conscious and unconscious) on audience/readers, actors and theatre management.
