Abstract

The flora of the island of Šipan near Dubrovnik has not been fully investigated up to now and only 28 species were recorded (Visiani 1842, 1847, 1850, Ad am o vie 1887, 1911a, 1911b, Beck 1901, Rajevski 1969).
This report of the flora includes 555 species of higher plants, 36 subspecies, 10 varieties and 23 forms. A great number of species, 534, have now been recorded in this area for the first time.
The geographical analysis of the flora includes 559 taxa which are classified into 11 floral elements and their subordinate groups. The greatest number of plants belong to the Mediterranean floral element (240 — 42.9%), South European floral element (128 — 22.8%) and to the group of wide spread plants (110 — 19.7%).
The spectrum of life-forms of the island shows an obvious similarity to the Mediterranean spectrum. There are some differences expressed in the increased percent of therophytes (46%) and decreased percent of hemicryptophytes (25%) indicative of the dry climatic conditions in the island.
