Abstract

The dynamics of nitrogen mineralization in the soil of the community Festuco-Agrostietum Ht. 1962 nardetosum strictae Trinaj. 1972 on the mountain Medvednica near Zagreb were investigated for two vegetational periods.
The soil in the community was strongly acid (pH in H20-4.72, and in KC1-3.74), very humous (6.17%) and the adsorption complex was unsaturated with bases. The average contents of total nitrogen amounted to 0.299% (0.235—0.381%), while mineral nitrogen accounted for a very low percentage (0.40% on an average) in relation to the total nitrogen contents.
The total accumulation of mineral nitrogen in the soil at a depth of 0—7 cm was 11.20 kg/ha during the vegetational period, which shows that the community Festuco-Agrostietum nardetosum strictae has a poor nitrogen supply. The mineral nitrogen in the soil of this community appeared exclusively in the form of ammonium, both in the natural habitat and under laboratory conditions of incubation. The accumulation in the laboratory was, however, considerably higher than in the habitat, and it amounted to 75.54 kg/ha during the vegetational period.
