Abstract

The nitrophilous edge community Urtico-Aegopodietum belonging to the alliance Aegopodion was found in northwestern Croatia. This is the first record of this community in Croatia. This community grows mainly in lowlands and hill areas, forming fringes along the roads, hedges, old parks and orchards, on forest and shrub margins. The floristic composition of Croatian stands of Urtico Aegopodietum is very similar to that of Central European. On the other hand, the stands investigated are poorer in forest plants and show some differences in the absence or presence of several species. These differences are probably caused by the anthropogenic character of habitats and by different geographical positions of our sites. Two subassociations can be distinguished within the association in northwestern Croatia, namely, subass. typicum and subass. calystegietosum.
