Abstract

The pasture-association Carici-Centaureetum rupestris is one of the most marked and most important grassland associations of the Mediterranean-mountain belt of the litoral slopes of the Dinarics.
On the Biokovo mountain this association has up until now been studied at its lower ecological limit (Trinajstic 1987), while this study presents its floristic analysis on the subalpine belt of Biokovo.
For that reason we can encounter in its floristic composition a number of species characteristic of mountain swards (i.e. Sesleria juncifolia, Anthyllis jacquinii, Sempervivum schlechani).
With regard to the floristic wealth it can be established that the ass. Carici-Centaureetuvi rap es tr is, in the subalpine belt of Biokovo is very rich in species. In only 5 phytcoenological records, as many as 75 species have been represented, while according to Horvat’s data (in Horvat et al. 1974) in 40 records, only 55 species were included.
Phytogeographically, the Biokovo components of ass. Carici-Centa- ureetum rupestris belong to its south-eastern variant within which composition we encounter locally endemical species Serratula cetinjensis ( — S. radiata subsp. cetinjensis), Asperula scutellaris, Armeria canescens and Satureja subspicata subsp. subspicata.
