Abstract

In this study author considers the relations between Tadija Smičiklas and the organisation Matica hrvatska, which started in 1873 when he became the member of this institution. In 1879 the second, and in 1882 the first volume of his Povijest hrvatska [Croatian History] were published and edited by Matica hrvatska. During the next few years the connections between him and the Matica became stronger, especially after he wrote Povijest Matice hrvatske [History of the Matica hrvatska]. Tadija Smičiklas had various functions in Matica hrvatska, first as its secretary, then as the member of the committee, and finally, from 1889, as its president. During his presidency the building of the palace of Matica hrvatska was finished in 1892. During that period a number of various scientific and literary publications connected to Croatian history and literature were published by Matica hrvatska. The period of his presidency was also marked by an increasing number of members of Matica hrvatska. In 1901 Smičiklas resigned from the presidency over this institution, since, in the previous year, he was elected the president of the Academy.
