Abstract
Laurel is an aromatic, spicy and medicinal woody plant with its natural population in the coastal areas of Croatia and other Mediterranean countries. Dried leaves are a popular spice; their essential oil is used in aromatherapy, cosmetics and in the food industry.
The aim of this research was to study the essential oil content in both male and female leaves and its variability throughout the year for male and female laurel plants separately.
The essential oil content in the leaves of female and male plants differs significantly. The analysis showed that the male plants had permanently lower essential oil content than the female ones. Unlike the female plants, the essential oil content in the male population varied minimally throughout the year.
