Abstract

Unmodernity, nontopicality and a mere marginal presence of civilizational information mark the domestic (left) side of Croatian bilingual dictionaries. This paper points out this inadequacy and its extent, by testing the efficacy of such (specifically: Croatian-English) dictionaries on Croatian newspaper and information-weekly texts -characterized precisely by modernity, topicality, thematic diversity and a wide span of lexical register. The paper then exemplifies a specific method of excerpting Croatian lexicographic material from such texts on a restricted corpus (one-month file of the daily Vjesnik and the weekly Danas, spanning letters A -O: a total of 175 instances of dictionary inadequacy). The material thus compiled was classified into six lexicographic categories, relevant for any similar compilation of domestic (source-language) dictionary material, and for planning similarly specific lexicographic tasks.
