EFFECT OF NITROGEN AND DENSITY ON THE GRAIN YIELD OF MAIZE

Abstract

The investigations were conducted on the Experimental Field of the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje on a chernozem type of soil, and Agricultural School Center, Vršac on o smonitsa type of soil; The research was performed from 1975. to 1978. The aim of these investigations was to establish the effect of different amounts of nitrogen on the grain yield in different densities. The principal factors investigated are the following: nitrogen and density. 1. Nitrogen: (N-1) 0 kg/ha; (N-2) 100 kg/ha; (N-3) 150 kg/ha: (N-4) 200 kg/ha; (N-5) 250 kg/ha; (N-6) 300 kg /ha. In the all variants of nitrogen the same amount of phosphorus and potassium (P₂O₅ - 100 kg/ha, K₂O - 70 kg/ha) has been used. 2. Density: (G-1) 28.571 plants/ha - 70 X 50 + 1 plant/hill; (G-2) 34.843 plants/ha - 70 x 41 + 1 plan/hill; (G-3) 43.017 plants/ha - 70 X 34 + 1. plant/hill; (G-4) 49.261 plants/ha - 70x 29 + 1 plant/hill; (G-5) 59.526 plants/ha - 70 X 24 + 1 plant/hill. An the basis of the (research) results obtained the following conclusion have been drawn: 1. The highest percent of barren and the lowest percent of lodged plants were in the variant N-1 (no-nitrogen) at Zemun Polje and Vršac. In the other variants of nitrogen percentage of barren and lodging plants was nearly the same. 2. With the increasing of densities, percentage of barren and lodging plants were regularly increased. 3. The highest grain yield at Zemun Polje was realized with 100 kg/ha of nitrogen but at Vršac with 150 kg/ha. At Zemun Polje the highest grain yield was obtained with 49.261 plants/ha but at Vršac with 42.017 plants/ha. 4. With respect to different agro-ecologic conditions grain yield of hybrid ZP SC IA was 17.5 q/ha or 16.9% less at Vršac than at Zemun Polje.
