Abstract

The Institute of Archaeology in collaboration with the Archaeology Department of Vinkovci City Museum carried out a field survey, trial excavations and archaeological supervision for the construction of a part of the eastern beltway around Vinkovci. The beltway route goes along the southeastern city limit, that is, across slight elevations situated northeast of the Bosut River, ending in the suburbs at Mirkovci (fig. 1). This is a part of Vinkovci where archaeological sites had been known previously, mainly based on surface and chance finds and small-scale rescue research. The AN 2 Mirkovci – Prišinci site is located at an elevation where fragments of prehistoric and medieval pottery were collected. The AN 3 Vinkovci – Milovanci site is located on an elevation (fig. 2) where finds from all periods were gathered. In terms of prehistoric finds, there are pottery fragments from Sopot and La Tène culture. Antique finds suggest there used to be a smaller settlement near Cibalae, while late medieval ceramic fragments can be associated with the settlement discussed in documented sources.
