Abstract

Proper utilization of productive capacity of dairy cows depends, largely, upon proper functioning of udder. The environment (management, care and feeding) is very important for the successful introduction of non active udder of dry dairy cows into the full activity. To time properly the start of special care for the development of milk producing capacity, we have to know the time before calving when the secretory activity of the udder starts. In order to contribute to the knowledge of this point of time there has been made investigations of the change of udder measurements as the indices of the secretory activity in the udder. The following measurements were taken: a) Cirumference - along the basis of udder along an abdomen, sidewise and longitudinal, b) Diameter - Sidewise, c) Distances between teats. Circumferences were measured by tape meter and diameter and distances by circle. The points between which the measurement were taken are shown on the drawing No 1. The results are presented in Tab. No 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Graph. No 1, 2, 3, and 4. The investigations showed: 1. The activity of the udder started between 22 and 19th day before calving. 2. The activity in the udder increases very significantly from 13th day before calving to the day of Calving. Of the total increase of udder measurements noted in the period of investigations 77,7% of the increase of circummf. 63,9% of the increase of the diameter and 87,5% of the increase of distances between teats take place in this period.
