Abstract

Croatia is today present on the international market of flowers only as an importer. Through the development of own high quality production of commercial flower species we shall be able to satisfy the domestic market, but we can hardly achieve the high productivity and technology of Western Europe and be also present as a significant exporter. Possibilities for development should be sought in the experiences of other countries, eg. Australia and Israel. They placed an autohtonic flora on the world market and focused all research programmes on those species. Diversity of flora elements, together with a large number of endemic species, is one of the characteristics of Croatian flora, presenting great interest to researchers from all over. That is the reason why comparative research on the conditions of growth of self growing flora and possibilities of the application in horticulture are very interesting. This program began a year ago in the garden of Department of ornamental flowers and landscape architecture of the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb.
