Abstract
Information and communication systems can be considered the basis of every programme of conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources. The efficacy of a national programme and a possibility of cooperation on programmes of various countries are largely determined by organization and access to documentation. Standardization of information and communication systems is one of the basic objectives in international cooperation. The standardization primarily refers to descriptor lists used in characterization and evaluation of genebank accessions. Considering demands and recommendations of international organizations and programmes (IPGRI, FAO, ECP/GR, ICPPGR) as well as the suggestions of the genebank managers in our neighboring countries it has been decided that the system "Genebank Management System - GMS" should be the basis of the future information system for plant genetic resources of the Republic of Croatia. The Croatian Bank of Plant Genes also has at its disposal the FAO database called VIEWS (FAO World Information and Early Warning System on Plant Genetic Resources). Links through the Internet enable access to data on national programmes of conservation of plant genetic resources of developed countries including detailed data on collections kept in genebanks.
