Abstract

In the period between 1993 and 1995 four new high yielding cultivars of spring malting barley were created at the Department for Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biometrics at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb. The cultivars Knin, Tomislav, Tvrtko and Sladar exceded significantly in the Official variety trials the standard Velebit, Jaran and Berenica both in yield and the quality of grain. The yield potential of these new cultivars is over 9 t/ha and in wide production applaying the appropriate tehnology yield sure and stable crops ranging from 5.5 to 6.0 t/ha. As new high quality cultivars of spring malting barley they spread fast in the agricultural areas of Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina they can be recommended to malt and beer industries as well as to family farms.
