Abstract

The paper’s preliminary aim is to undertake a detailed research of Maeterlinck’s reception in Serbia and Montenegro, especially of the theatrical performances and criticism. The discovered documents reveal a prominent presence of the Belgian Nobel Prize winner in the theatre and publishing, which leads to the primary goal of the research, i.e. the demonstration of diverse readings, analyses and interpretations of Maurice Maeterlinck. The theatrical productions point to the possibilities of interpretation that transcend the author’s age and the Symbolist theatre. Ranging from fabulous dream to committed literature, there is a broad spectrum of interpretive possibilities and powerful meanings. Diverse interpretations and reactualisation of Maeterlinck’s works suggest the possibilities of future readings and a living, uninterrupted reception from the late 19th century to the present day.
