Abstract
This thesis deals with the influence of managerial knowledge and skills on the competitiveness and general performance of a company. As management represents a crucial function within the company, and since knowledge is the biggest asset a company can own, it is important to see how investment in managers’ development affects business results. Also, important question is whether this investment is a guarantee of success in today’s economy. If a manager wants to respond successfully to the challenges he is facing, it is not enough just to have a certain personality, it is more important to have knowledge and skills. In fact, the level of skills and abilities of the manager determines and affects the quality of its entire group of employees. The thesis presents the impact of investing in employees and managers from theoretical aspect, by using scientific and professional literature, and also the practical aspect based on the example of certain companies. The bases of the survey are scientific articles and expert literature. Current situation in Croatian companies is presented by the results of the research. Management, as a vital part of today’s companies, has a very important role regarding business results, and thus the development of managerial skills and competences has a major influence on achieving sustainable competitive advantage. Today, managers operate in a variety of environments that change quickly, with fierce competition in the market, therefore it is necessary to continually educate and improve their own knowledge and skills.
