Abstract

Entrepreneurial activity is recognised as the engine of growth for national economy. Entrepreneurial activity is based on the development of innovative products and services to which intellectual property protection is a key determinant. Protection of intellectual property rights plays an important role in contemporary entrepreneurship for successful development of innovations and successful business in general. The most developed economies are at the same time those with the highest rate of penetration of intellectual property rights, while in developing economies more encouragement is required in the usage of IP. In certain conditions IP regime enables sharing of technological knowledge and information which improves the market conditions. The usage of intellectual property rights enables development and protection of new technological solutions for entrepreneurs, distinction of their output on the market, increase of value for non material assets and expansion through licencing and franchising. Intellectual property rights are becoming increasingly important in determining competitive edge for entrepreneurs. In this article the importance of intellectual property rights in entrepreneurial environment as well as the relationship among entrepreneurial activities by sectors and the level of penetration of intellectual property rights will be analysed.
