Abstract

The paper discusses issues and possibilities for nuclear waste (NW) disposal.Various strategies, international experience and practice in NW disposal as well asgeotechnical aspects of the disposal are shown.It provides an overview on the problem of site selection for NW repository and implementation of exploratory works.The paper describes the concept of a deep geological repository and the application of multiple barriers for NW isolation.Suitable types of host rocks including geological and hydrogeological conditions in the selected geological formation are discussed. It also describes the methods and necessary conditions for shallow disposal of low and intermediate level NW.Possibilities for a preliminary assessment of the safety of NW repository are also discussed. It provides an overview of the situation in Croatia regarding the current problem of site selection for a future storage and disposal site of low and intermediate level nuclear waste.
