Abstract

An appraisal of titanium and titanium alloys that are accepted as an attractive structural materials due to their intrinsic properties such as high strength, low density, excellent corrosion resistance, thermal stability and bio-compatibility is presented in this contribution.
Most important titanium alloys from α, nearly α, α+β and metastable β groups are described. Also, possibilities of heat treatment are outlined, particularly detailing the homogenization annealing and ageing processes through which α+β and β alloys gain high
strength properties. Processes used in welding titanium are presented too, including a summary of comparative advantages and drawbacks of titanium materials. At the end, a survey of titanium alloys applications is given, paticularaly used in cases where unique
properties of this metal are exploited, such as high strengts stuctures and application requesting high corrosion resistance.
