Comparability in bilingual law dictionaries

Abstract
Comparability of notions (from the point of view of 'signifié' and 'signifiant') is a well known linguistic and lexicographic issue. English language variants (national variants, International English, Continental English) are all based on different (frequently incongruent) legal systems, and as such are an inexhaustible source of lexicographic material and lexicological research. In compiling bilingual law dictionaries and in translations, the issue is further emphasized, since in addition to incongruity of legal systems and notions, one should take into consideration: polysemy, syntactic interdependence of meanings, borrowings and multi-word expressions which could be taken as basic frames within which legal notions could be compared.
Keywords
comparability; bilingual law dictionaries; incongruity of legal systems; polysemy; multi-word terms
