Abstract

Obesity is a complex multifactorial disease that develops under the influence of genetic and metabolic factors, environmental, social and cultural enviroment and bad habits. For the treatment of obesity there is a high failure rate and there is considerable effort invested in developing effective programs since it is known that the majority of obese people unfortunately do not retain newly acquired habits and with a significant number of participants coming to regain the weight. The objective of this program was specially designed to educate obese individuals adulthood on the basic principles of nutrition and the importance of physical activity and the risks resulting from being overweight. The effectiveness of the program in reducing body weight and reduce the risk for factors such as high cholesterol, sugar and blood pressure were examined in this study. The program ''10 days to better health' 'included 104 obese subjects, of which 85 respondents were female and 18 male subjects, aged over 45 years who were held for 10 days on Sljeme in 2014 and 2015. The program took place in small groups of 10 to 15 participants. A statistically significant difference between the first and the tenth day is determined by body weight, BMI (body mass index), % body fat, systolic blood pressure, waist and hips, and the ratio of waist and hips. After ten days of program, there is not statistically difference for glucose, cholesterol and diastolic blood pressure after ten days. Even thought it is because of the time limit for the duration of the program ''10 days to better health'' that the significant effect on the observed parameters of the metabolic syndrome is absent, the respondents were participating in the program, aware of the risk factors for obesity and the interaction of the participants themselves backed up and encouraged for further change in their habits in order reduce risk.
