Abstract
LEANDRIANA, the name of the Leander Brozović Collection in
Koprivnica Municipal Museum, is a collection assembled by
the founder of the museum, Leander Brozović (1897-1962), a
veterinary doctor and a pioneer in modern Croatian museology.
It comprises prints (etchings, engravings, lithographs,
photogravures and others) and reproductive prints that
Brozović started to collect while a schoolboy.
Notes and details about the acquisition of every object are
recorded in Brozović’s handwritten notebook List of My
Antiquities, which he started to write as a veterinary student
in Brno on April 21, 1920, while acquisitions before that year
were noted down on cards with notes.
As a high school boy in Osijek, Zagreb, Vukovar and
Koprivnica, Leander Brozović showed a great interest in collecting
old things, as recorded in a handwritten note from the
23-year-old Brozović: My love for collecting is very great. I
have put a lot of care and money into my old things to date.
Many a free moment I have spent on old things, and I shall
admit that in the night some old piece was an impossible
dream for me. (Brozović: 1920).
In fact it was the discovery, the transcription, transliteration
and study of the contents of a manuscript notebook found
in the possession of an heir in 2009 that enabled light to be
thrown on the time and manner of acquisition of some of
the prints, while personal comments written as diary entries
contributed to an understanding of the policy behind the collection
of antiquities and the mindset of the collector.
The prints in the Collection were assembled as private property
between 1918 and 1962, and today provide an insight into
the historical, cultural and artistic contexts, into the oeuvres
of some masters of the print, different printmaking techniques
and the development of styles and periods in the graphic art.
The collection of drawings and prints from the Leander
Brozović Bequest has the status of a property of outstanding
worth, on account of the age, sensitivity and the importance
of the impressions and artists in the context of the European
history of the art of printmaking. The collection of old masters
from the Brozović Bequest contains prints from most of the
European printmaking centres from the 16th to the 20th century
