Abstract

he exhibition Charming Guardians of Memory, devised by Andreja Šimičić and put on in the Museum of Slavonia at the end of
2014, comprised 32 portrait miniatures from the Collection of Paintings and Frames of the Museum of Slavonia. In this exhibition, as the author and curator of the exhibition says in her introduction, the portrait miniatures of the Museum of Slavonia were
exhibited and seen as a whole unit for the first time.
The miniatures cover a period of time from 1770 to 1926, the most numerous belonging to the 19th century, the time at which
this genre flourished in the whole of Central Europe. The works on show were the work of foreign or peripatetic painters, and
were commissioned by the Slavonian gentry and aristocracy as well as the richer members of the bourgeoisie. The miniatures
exhibited showed a great diversity of techniques in their making, and the quality on the whole reflects the artistic production of
their time, with just a few works standing out as extremely high quality work of excellent miniaturists.
