NEIGHBOURHOOD MUSEUMS

Abstract
The neighbourhood museum is an institutional form of the
museum and has everything needed for it to be recognised by
the public as a legitimate type of museum, but unfortunately
has not yet been so identified. Not even in the museological
community is the neighbourhood museum looked upon as
an independent type of museum; rather, there are efforts to
classify it within the concept of eco-museum or community
museum.
At the First Museum Conference on Eco-Museums, Community
Museums and the Live Community only in one paper was
reference made to neighbourhood museums. Unluckily, even
in this address, “Promoting the potential of diversity in (multi)
ethnic neighbourhoods. The role of community museums and
community-oriented cultural institutions”, there was never a
single mention of the term “neighbourhood museum”, which
tended to be discussed in the context of community museum.
It is an advance that discussion about such a type of museum
has begun, but unluckily not under its true name.
The work of a neighbourhood museum is a set of examples
of a specific kind of museum, which deals with its own, local
urban community. At the same time, through these examples,
consideration is given to the origin, development, themes
handled and purpose of the neighbourhood museum.
