Abstract

Pedagogical theories and practices highlight the beginning of formal education as an important milestone in the life of a child. Transition to CSE is of great importance in the sense of development, but in the same time it can be a very stressful part of childhood. Different views of child have brought a lack of consensus and understanding of transition process. At the same time the new curricular reform in Croatia highlights the lowering of starting school age for children which is an additional transition challenge by itself. This paper will present a basic theoretical framework for the transition process as well as the role of teacher education programs in solving problems and challenges facing Croatian educational system by accepting the lowering of starting school age for children. Content analysis is used to analyze programs of three major teacher education programs in Croatia. The data showed the need to coordinate programs with new curricular demands.
