Abstract

This paper describes the phonological, morphonological and morphological characteristics of local dialects in Roverija in Istria, which so far are almost unknown in the dialectal literature. Roverija is the name of the area between Svetvinčenat and Vodnjan, with 22 villages, all connected with the common linguistic characteristics on all the linguistic levels, so they form a compact unit. Research results show that all the villages in Roverija have the same local speech, which was confirmed by all the original speakers and also show they have a set of characteristics typical for the majority of a local dialects in the southwest of Istria and none of the linguistic characteristics typical for other dialects of the same dialect. With this dialectal description, another part of thechakavian dialect of Istria has been fulfilled.
