Abstract

This paper examines the interdisciplinary methodological “deviations” of contemporary art and photography in the context of ethnological and cultural anthropological research practices and the postmodern disciplinary turn. The ethnographic turn in art here is unified as a multi-faceted concept situated at the intersection of sociology, ethnology, urban geography, philosophy and other social sciences and humanities. Drawing on the examples of three younger generation local authors’ photographic art practices, this paper critically analyses methodological practices of artistic-scientific research, new spaces of interpretation, as well as presentational, ethical and structural problems raised by such an approach. Also, it identifies the deviations from the traditional anthropological research interests in the works of selected authors; how they engage with the contemporaneity and the urban, their self-criticism and selfreflexivity, and how they circumvent the unilateral approach to the Other.
