Abstract

In this paper we will review the investigation of the material
remains of floor, wall and ceiling decorations at the Sorna site
near Poreč, and research of the documentation of data recorded in
the course of archaeological excavations at the site. The remains
of painted plaster and marble facing are discussed in detail, while
mosaic surfaces are treated solely by way of an examination of the
available photographic documentation. It is the intention of this
paper to offer a possible interpretation of the appearance of the
floor, wall and ceiling decoration of the Antiquity period villa on
the Sorna peninsula, based on existing fragments, documentation
and parallels to similar decorations in Roman villas across the
empire. The proposed interpretations are, of course, conceptual
and certainly subject to reinterpretation and supplementation.
