Abstract

The paper analyzes the factors which have an effect on the competitiveness of the shipping industry along with the business strategies that shipping companies use to gain a better position on the market. The empirical part of this study is concentrated on the business operations of the largest Croatian shipping company Tankerska plovidba d.d. and one of the largest companies in the world - Royal Dutch Shell, and the analysis of the methods which these two companies use to achieve competitiveness. The concluding segment of the analysis
presents a general conclusion regarding the dynamics and laws of the shipping industry.
