Abstract

This paper analyses the implementation of environmental management systems into small engineering companies in Croatia. It is focused on the method of environmental management in accordance with ISO 14001, which is the dominant international system in the world. Further on, a comparison was made between ISO 14001 and the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), which is implemented in EU countries. This paper attempts to account for the importance of implementation of an environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001. For a company, this is a method of displaying corporate social responsibility and ethos, increasing competitiveness and saving money as a result of a more economical business activity. The current situation of the environmental management system in Croatia has also been analysed using the number of issued certificates, and it has also been compared to the situation in certain other European countries. The implementation of environmental management systems in accordance with ISO 14001 is outlined in a few steps. The paper also analyses the policy of the protection of the corporate environment according to the Code of Ethics for Engineers. The introduction of environmental management system ISO 14001 is a strategic task for any company. The company shows its social responsibility and ethics, achieve greater competitiveness and cost savings due to more efficient operations.
