Abstract
The aim of the present study was to research the possibility of using peas as an alternative source of proteins in diets of sheep and lambs in organic farming. Pea (Pisum sativum L.) in diets for sheep and lambs is mostly used as seed and less as straw. Its application is spread in Mediterranean countries, considering favorable climatic conditions, increasing cost of soybeans, soybean contamination, prohibition of the use of genetically modified soybeans in animal diets in organic farming, as well as prohibition of the use of meat meal as a source of protein in animal diets. Numerous researches indicate the use of peas in the diets of sheep and lambs considering high nutritive value due to high crude proteins content (22-34%), well balanced essential amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids as well as high starch content (>40% of dry matter). Antinutritional matters in todays varieties of peas are negligible compared to former varieties and it is possible to use peas in the diets for sheep and lambs without the application of heat treatment. When balancing diets with peas as a source of protein, barley is commonly used as grain due to its different speed of degradation. Analyzing the production traits and quality of sheep and lamb products (daily gain, yield and milk quality, slaughtering quality of lamb carcasses and meat) in the research the use of peas as protein source in the diets as partial or complete replacement for soybean has been confirmed. Further research is needed to determine adequate peas content in diets for sheep and lambs in organic farming, considering their production traits and quality of obtained products.
