Abstract

The author begins his work by describing typical Freudian analysis based on the theory of instinct. He then discusses contemporary models of inadequate relationships created by the early relationships between the mother and the child, which is the theoretical basis of Kohut’s model for the treatment of narcissistic personalities. Further development of theory is approached as contemporary post-classical psychoanalysis. Finally, two clinical examples are given and commented. The first example talks about the patient’s entry in the final stage of psychoanalysis whereas the second example is of a patient providing interpretation of his own dream thus showing his psychoanalysis has been successfully completed.

Keywords

psychoanalysis; narcissism; self-object relationships; postclassic psychoanalysis
