Abstract

Today, traffic is defined as the necessity that meets the needs of the population in terms of mobility and exchange of goods. But in spite of all the benefits provided by the traffic, it certainly has some negative sides, the most important of which is reflected in the pollution of the environment through emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore, attempts are made to prevent such contamination of the environment in the future through the use of alternative fuels. The main objective of establishing an infrastructure of alternative fuels is the development of a sustainable transportation system with minimal negative effects on the environment. There are different types of alternative fuels, such as: electricity, hydrogen, biofuels, natural gas (which is divided into liquefied natural gas and compressed natural gas), and liquefied petroleum gas. At the EU level, alternative fuels and their infrastructure are governed by the Directive of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on the establishment of infrastructure for alternative fuels. The Directive provides that each Member State should adopt a national policy framework relating to the establishment of infrastructure for alternative fuels. In accordance with the Directive, the Republic of Croatia has brought the national policy framework that lays down the various measures needed to meet the national goals in this area.
