Abstract

Global interconnectedness and demographic changes of societies across the world actualize the question of developing a dialogue between members of different cultures. Since it is still encountering obstacles and difficulties, there is recognition of the importance of intercultural competence in the development of which education has a crucial role.Taking this into consideration, the paper analyses the concept of intercultural competence, its definition, constituents, and implications for development in practice. Encouraging the development of competences in general, including intercultural competence, is closely related to the actualization of the curriculum approach. Since there is a curriculum framework on the national level, schools have a certain degree of freedom in the process of achieving learning outcomes. In that sense, the paper addresses curriculum premises and possibilities of optimal development of intercultural competence in school context.
