Abstract
There are twenty-one tourist board offices in counties of the Republic of Croatia whose task is to promote and improve the tourism of the Republic of Croatia and the economic interests of legal and natural persons providing catering and other tourist services or performing other activities directly related to tourism by managing the destination at the level for which they are established. Modern communication technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Viber, Messenger and others are becoming more and more important in promoting tourist content both on domestic and foreign markets. The subject of this research paper is to find out to what extent and in what ways the tourist boards of cities, municipalities, regions and counties use modern communication technologies for the purpose of promoting a tourist destination. The objectives of the research are to determine the representation and level of application of communication technologies in the various tourist regions of the Republic of Croatia, for which specific tourist boards are responsible. The methods used in this paper are desk research based on domestic and foreign literature, professional and scientific papers as well as historical methods, methods of analysis and synthesis and quantitative methods. The quantitative method was conducted by distributing a survey questionnaire to the entire population of tourist communities with the aim of collecting primary data on the mode, scope, quality and success of using modern communication technologies in promoting tourism in Croatia. Modern tourists mainly communicate through contemporary technologies and the duty of tourist boards is to adapt to contemporary demand and standards in world tourism to ensure regional, European and world competitiveness of destinations. Research results point to the need to improve communication technologies within the tourist board system. The contribution of this work is reflected in the understanding of modern forms of communication and the determination of their presence in tourist boards in the Republic of Croatia.
