ASSESSMENT OF BODY COMPOSITION OF PATIENTS WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES BY BIOELECTRICAL IMPEDANCE ANALYSIS

Abstract
To compare body composition in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) and healthy subjects, also to analyze body composition in T1DM patients regarding age, disease duration, glycemic control and insulin doses. Patients and methods. 21 T1DM patients were included (mean duration of diabetes was 13 years, mean HbA1c 7%). Mean total insulin dose (TDD) was 50 IU; basal 23 IU, prandial 27 IU. Control group were 14 healthy normal body weight subjects. Body composition was analyzed by bioelectrical impedance. Results. There was no difference in body composition between the two groups. T1DM patients had positive correlation of fat mass with TDD (r=0.637, p<0.05) and HbA1c (r=0.499, p<0.05). They were divided into subgroups according to glycemic control; 10 satisfactory (HbA1c<7.5%) mean HbA1c 6.82%, 11 unsatisfactory (HbA1c>7.5%) mean HbA1c 8.68%. Those with satisfactory control took 20 IU less insulin per day (p=0.035). Conclusion. In patients with T1DM insulin therapy changes body composition.
