Abstract

Texts about architecture in this collection were written between 1962 and 2013 by the architect Tomislav Premerl and were published over his 50-year long career as a scientist. They reflect the author’s reflections on a variety of architecture and art topics. Each text is an independent whole. However, there is a common thread that runs through all of them and weaves them into a coherent sequence dedicated to complex issues. The book is at the same time a chronicle of theoretical and critical considerations continuously present over 50 years thus manifesting permanence and stability of some fundamental beliefs and values. Premerl’s honest, intelligent, and engaging discourse reminds us that we should abstain from dealing with anything related to our profession in lighthearted and routine manner, especially knowledge and our capacity to nurture critical thinking. His texts highlight a noble vision of a true builder, a vision that prefers careful reconsideration and philosophical underpinnings to concise criticism.
