Abstract

Switching apparatus and appliances are certainly
one of the most important factors in medium
voltage switchgear protection, especially from
short circuit.
The predominant part of the Croatian
electric power system still use the older
technologies of switching devices and electric
arc extinguishing media.
Review of the development of these switching
apparatus and electric arc extinguishing
media, from air to vacuum, as well as the basic
principles of operation of each type of appliance,
presents the systematic review of the historical
development of the same.
Tabular overview of basic technical parameters
of each type shows the comparison and the
difference among the types, and particularly
emphasizes the techniques and arc extinguishing
media, regarding their changes during the
historical development of the MV apparatus.
An irreplaceable medium for electric arc
extinguishing in the field of medium voltage
is definitely a vacuum (apparatus with vacuum
interrupters). [1]
Environmental acceptability of the apparatus
with vacuum interrupters is unquestionable in the
times of increased environmental awareness.
