Abstract

Introduction: Preclinical research on dandelion has revealed numerous healing properties. It is used as
diuretic and cholagogum. It enhanches kidneys and liver function and increases appetite. Furthermore,
it is insulin stimulant and has been increasingly used as an alternative for slowing the growht of tumor
and improving the quality of life of patient. Aim: The aim of this study was to present characteristic of
dandelion that are important for effectiveness of dandelion as healing agent in certain tumor treatment.
Matherials and methods: The research was conducted by using available primary and secondary
scientific literature.
Results: Results published in the International Journal of Oncology (2008) have shown that the dandelion
leaf’s crude extract (DLE) had growth-decreasing effect on breast cancer cells and has blocked the
invasion prostate cancer cells. The dandelion root’s crude extract (DRE) was found to block breast
cancer cell invasion. Results of the research conducted in 2011 have shown that DRE specifically and
effectively induces apoptosis in human melanoma cells without inducing toxicity in noncancerous cells.
Other research have shown effect of dandelion hydro-alcoholic extract on blood cell and effect of DLE

and dandelion flowers’s crude extract (DFC) on UVB irradiation inhibition. Conclusion: The available
data indicates that the DLE and DRE contain active compounds that can be used to develop new agents
against tumors, breast and prostate cancer, melanoma, anemia as well as to protect the skin fibroblasts
from UV radiation. However, it should be concluded that dandelion can slow the progression of certain
types of tumors.
