Abstract

At the beginning of modern medicine in
Croatia, i.e. in 1896, a surgery technician Jakob Hlavka (1869
– 1955) founded the fi rst factory of medical instruments
in Zagreb – Croatia and the only one of its kind in this part
of Europe. The factory manufactured surgical instruments,
metal equipment for hospitals, doctor’s offi ces and health
centres, orthopaedic prostheses and bandages. His company
developed a diversifi ed production and represented many
renowned foreign companies. It operated until 1946, when it
was confi scated and devastated.
