Abstract

In the article Karel Čapek's utopian novel Krakatit is analysed from the point of feminist and gender literary criticism. Female characters are observed in their compliance and non-compliance with traditional gender roles and their influence on the development and resolution of the plot. Taking into account the plethora of their individual characteristics, the analysis reveals the potential subversion of female stereotypes and assumption of an active role in the novel dominated by the central male hero.
