Abstract

In his book Spatial Magic, Ivan Šimunović, professor emeritus, raises a number of major and vital issues that provide a powerful stimulus for a professional interdisciplinary debate in the area of urbanism, physical planning, economic theory of space development, regionalism, and ecology. The title of the book highlights the author’s fascination with ”nature as the prime architectural ambience able to resist the challenges of times and peoples including all the good and bad scenarios and has nevertheless remained a desirable place to live for thousands of years”. Three themes are dominant in the book: identity of the city, metropolitanization and a spatial framework that defines us. The main impetus for a reflection on space is Split which has grown out of the Diocletian’s palace. Although the author’s ideas are not new, they are still topical today. Thus the theme of ”a regional city” or ”a city in the region” promoted by Ivan Šimunović in the 1980s, still proves fresh and applicable today.
