The influence of the idiom spoken by a linguistic community on educational practice
Zdenka Gudelj-Velaga

Abstract
The author presents results of research in which secondary school and university students, elementary school teachers and Croatian teachers showed their awareness of belonging to their native idiom. They chose one, two, three or even four idioms, which were most often combinations of dialect and subdialect. The research showed that horizontally distributed idioms provide the linguistic basis for communicative competence in standard language. The concept of school linguistic community is affirmed. The relationship of school with social linguistic practice is pointed out, along with the need for interdisciplinary research on school linguistic practice and for scholarly establishment of school linguistic policy.
